DEMI DE VRIES - ROT/OP
ROT/OP – a remedy against Brain Rot (2025) tackles the addictive nature of social media through design. Triggered by the realization that endless scrolling can consume “four hours a day—about 17 years of your life,” Demi de Vries created a lounge chair that confronts users with their own habits. As the chair gradually folds the sitter toward a phone screen, a video on the dangers of “Brain Rot” plays, simulating a rock-bottom moment before reopening with practical steps to resist overconsumption. For GOGBOT, the work will be shown in a museal setup with a screen combining her graduation video and footage of the chair, alongside scheduled moments where visitors can safely experience its unsettling yet eye-opening effect.
Demi de Vries is a recently graduated graphic designer from ArtEZ Zwolle, originally from Groenlo. She describes herself as perfectionistic, experimental, and solution-oriented, with a focus on typography, books, posters, and exploring the boundaries of her field by working across disciplines, including spatial design. For GOGBOT 2025, she presents her graduation project ROT/OP, which embodies her multidisciplinary approach and critical engagement with contemporary media culture.
This work was selected as part of Youngbloods, GOGBOT’s platform highlighting promising recent graduates.
