Born and based in Shanghai, Lu Yang graduated from the China Academy of Art in 2010. Lu Yang has become an artist whose work is equally at home in a film festival screening and visual art exhibition. Using a variety of media: video, installation, animation, and digital painting and games, the artist explores existential issues about the nature of life and where it resides.
Traditional Chinese medicine, buddhism and spirituality are one of the cornerstones of Lu Yang’s work. By combining tradition with the world of manga, design and video games Yang creates an intriguing universe. Expanding his own existence beyond his body and the rules of the physical world with avatars. Creating modern versions of the "Memento Mori", always with an hint of (dark) humor.
LuYang’s works have been featured in important solo and group exhibitions. Among which two editions of the Venice Biennale; in 2022 and 2015, and the Shanghai Biennale of 2012. Lu Yang currently splits his time between Beijing and Shanghai.
